Deana Haggag, 26, Curatorial Practice MFA Candidate at MICA & Curator-in-Residence at Gallery CA
Nicknames: Dina, Deena, Dena, Diana + DeaNNa, unofficially. My iPhone autocorrects my name to ‘Drag Gag’.
While working in the art world in the Big Apple, Deana Haggag discovered ‘all black everything’ was the standard dress code. So when she moved down to Charm City, she joyously exclaimed, “I saw the light!”
And don’t take it the wrong way, New York. Her admiration for your city knows no bounds, but it seems the unpredictability and quirkiness of Baltimore fits perfectly with the unconventional being of this rising art world star.
An Egyptian beauty, one would think she would have become a model. She did take a stab at the cat-walking career, even working with some well-known photographers. “One photographer took me out for a drink after taking my picture,” she said. “He told me he’d used none of those photos because I had too much of the ‘jazz hands’. I didn’t know what to do with my hands!”
But she’s OK with that. She’s in the industry of eccentricity –a mixed bag of individualistic sorts– and conveys that from head to toe.
Describe your style. It’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I’ve got a smidge of an attention deficit. One day, I want to aspire (and afford) to only wear white faux leather and pant suits made of matching fabric. I mean, everything, the blazer, pants, shirt, belt, shoes, glasses: all the same fabric. I’ve also got a touch of OCD.
What can’t you live without? Pippi & Mason, high-waisted pants, graphic design, GIFs, Ole Henriksen Truth Revealed Vitamin C Super Crème (SPF 15), Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Awesome Foundation, Gallery CA intern staff<3
You’d never be caught in… a cheese eating contest. No lie. No one would catch up. Also, toe rings give me the heebie jeebies.
Where do you like to shop? I’m such a whiny shopper! I hate the crowds and mess. This is one reason I love Hunting Ground. The energy in that joint rocks. I am also still mourning the close of Village Thrift [on Charles Street]. Where will I now find all my weird, high-waisted pants?
Who/what inspires your style? I want to be better at being Solange Knowles than Solange Knowles is at being Solange Knowles. Truth.
Thoughts on your city’s style: Baltimore’s style is a testament to how immeasurably damn weird this place is –home to the pencil ‘stache, beehive beauty contests, Boh tats and alarmingly excessive tumbleweave. Star Trek costume parties just are a way of life. It’s a hipster and hustler haven with a little bit of ‘ho & bro’ for good measure. It’s an (almost) adorably strange place. I really f*cking love this city.
Anything else you want to talk about? I’m very chatty so it may be best to just skip this part. Love.
